AMBERGRIS CAYE is the most northerly of the Belize cayes, and only a few miles off the Yucatan Peninsula, and Mexico to the north. The town of San Pedro is a charming relaxed place with shops, bars and restaurants connected by sandy roads. The town is on the southern tip of the caye, between the long white sandy beach and the lagoon behind. All along the beach are wooden jetties which allow an efficient water taxi service to collect and drop you off pretty well anywhere in town. The only petrol-powered vehicles on the island are taxis and delivery trucks, everyone else travels by 'golf cart' which are available to rent all over town. There are a number of hotels and apartments available in San Pedro ranging from very simple roomsto elegant luxurious hotels.
HOTELS ON AMBERGRIS CAYE: There are hotels of all budgets and styles in San Pedro, so we have selected four that will cover most peoples taste and budget depending on what type of trip you are on. Daily fishing and diving trips can be arranged from all of the hotels that we list. Trips to the mainland for jungle treks, waterfall sliding, white water rafting and visiting one of the many Mayan ruins can also be arranged in advance or once you get to your hotel.
AQUA SUITES: is an all suite/apartment hotel right in the centre of San Pedro on the beach. You can take one-bedroom suites with sitting room, kitchen and a balcony. The suites all surround a central swimming pool and terrace restaurant overlooking the beach. There are a number of shops, bars and restaurants within a few minutes walk of Aqua Suites, so this is ideal if you want to be in the centre of town.
STEVE AND BECKY'S: is a small hotel comprising of only 10 colourful pastel cottages set in a tropical garden, one block back from the sea. Steve and Becky-s is operated by Ramon-s Village, a hotel just across the road on the beach. Guests would have access to the swimming pool, bar, restaurant and other facilities at Ramon's. You are also only a few minutes walk from many bars, restaurants and shops.
CAPRICORN RESORT: is about ten minutes north of the centre of San Pedro by water taxi or golf cart. This is primarily a stunning British run open-air beachfront bar and restaurant, which has three comfortable, air-conditioned beach cabanas. One of the cabanas has a queen size bed, and two with twin double beds. All have en-suite shower rooms, and a balcony with a hammock to relax in. Your hosts, Annabel and Clarence offer an elegant but relaxed atmosphere, and nothing seems too much trouble for their guests. Clarence is also the chef and produces some wonderful food; this is one of the best restaurants in the area. This is the ideal place if you want to really get away from it all.
VICTORIA HOUSE: is about ten minutes water taxi, or golf cart ride south of San Pedro. This is a stunning hotel based around a Caribbean plantation style villa with wide verandas and tropical gardens. The air-conditioned accommodation ranges from luxuriously decorated plantation style bedrooms in the main hotel, to thatched cabanas in the garden overlooking the beach. There are also two stunning villas, one with two bedrooms, and the other with three which are ideal for a group of friends. The Victoria House restaurant is one of the best on Ambergris Caye, and is a must whether you stay here or not. The hotel-s bar also has a lovely civilised yet buzzy atmosphere and is often fun into the early hours of the morning. CAYO ESPANTO: is a stunning four acre private island about ten minutes by boat from San Pedro. The island has 4 stunning private waterfront villas and two bungalows. Each villa has it's own private infinity pool, dock and a butler for private gourmet cuisine and drinks service. Snorkelling, Scuba diving and fly fishing can be arrange in advance or once you have arrived. This is an ideal place for people who really want to get away form it all in absolute luxury. The island can be taken as a whole, subject to availability or each villa or bungalow rented individually.
TARPON HOUSE: For those guests who are looking for a unique and luxurious week of fly fishing while staying in San Pedro, we are pleased to offer the comforts of Tarpon House. Located on the ocean, just outside the town of San Pedro, Tarpon House is a lush Caribbean home with all the amenities. This richly appointed house, with its own private beach and pier, makes an ideal base for families and small groups who want to fish the productive waters around Ambergris Caye in style. Getting to Tarpon House is both quick and easy. Guests will make the 15 minute flight up to San Pedro from the Belize International Airport. From the airstrip in San Pedro, it's just a short taxi ride to the house.
When fly fishing the area around Ambergris Caye, guests can expect wide variety of opportunities and fishing situations. For those who like to wade the flats when stalking bonefish, the vast mangrove estuary just outside of town will provide endless hours of excitement. And just a short boat ride south of Tarpon House lays the Congejos system of islands and flats. This whole area is a rich bonefish nursery where running into large schools of bones is an everyday occurrence. For those who might be thinking about tarpon, the gin clear flats around Savannah Caye, to the west of town, are an excellent challenge and offer some of the finest sight casting to tarpon found anywhere.
These gorgeous flats hold large numbers of tarpon, schools of big tackle busting jacks, and the occasional permit. Tarpon House features a great room (36x28 feet) with two separate seating areas, a dining room with a table for 10, cable television, a surround sound stereo system, DVD player, and CD system. Outside is a large verandah, which wraps around the great room and overlooks the gorgeous aquamarine waters of the Caribbean Sea. Marsha, our fabulous private chef who works with us in San Pedro, prepares the meals at Tarpon House. She will work to your schedule and can accommodate most special dietary requirements if given enough notice.
