| Southwater Caye is a stunning palm tree covered island in an archipelago about half an hour by boat of Dagriga, half way down the Belize coast, which has an airport that is 15 minutes flight from Belize City. Southwater is definitely dedicated to divers and fishermen. There are two or three very simple lodges on the island offering simple but comfortable accommodation, and pretty good local food. There is a lovely small sandy beach to relax on should you wish, but most people visiting the island tend to be busy diving or fishing for most of the day. The island is right next to the barrier reef which opens up huge options for both fishing and diving in and outside the reef. The fishing here is especially good, a group last year caught 27 different varieties of fish in 4 days.
Southwater accommodation: We have selected the best two (they are both pretty basic).
IZE (International Zoological Expeditions): is a very simple lodge, mainly used by University students for ecological and marine study tours. However this does mean that the staff are highly trained and very efficient at organising any of their great activities. The wooden beach cabanas are very simple but comfortable with fans and showers. As the island generally has a good sea breeze there is no air-conditioning, but most of the cabanas have slatted wooden windows all around which double as blinds and ventilation. The central bar and restaurant area is cosy and fun in the evenings when everyone sits around and tells stories about their days adventures. All of the food is prepared from wholesome local ingredients and there are set meal times and menus. Breakfast will generally be fitted in around what activities you are doing each morning.
Blue Marlin: is a larger cabana hotel with quite a variety of Cabana, some of wood, and some like prefabricated igloos, however the interiors are air-conditioned, have en-suite shower rooms, and the furnishings, although simple, are perfectly comfortable. The bar and restaurant are considerable larger than IZE, and are generally the hub of the nightlife, if any, on the island. The restaurant does also have an a la carte menu, so you can visit this whether you are staying in IZE or Blue Marlin. The hotel is also very much based around scuba diving and fishing groups, both deep sea and fly fishermen.
