Cartagena
The quality of the restaurants in Cartagena is exceptional, offering many different styles of food to a very high standard. The cost for us, using Sterling, is very good, with an average meal includ-ing drinks for around Ј10 per head. Shopping in Cartagena is interesting, with antique shops selling Pre-Colombian artefacts, from the Incas and other Andian civilisations, to Spanish antiques. Cloths, arts and crafts, jewellery, particularly emeralds are generally good quality and greatvalue.

THE HOTEL SANTA CLARA is operated by the French hotel group Accor. This hotel is a beautiful colonial convent conversion, which has maintained as many of the original style as possible. The cen-tral squares have tropical trees, fountains and a swimming pool. The hotel’s 180 rooms have been tastfully decorated with a colonial theme. All rooms have bathroom en-suite, air-conditioning, cable television, a minibar and a safebox. The hotel has three good restaurants, offering French, Italian, Colombian and international food, and an extensive international wine list. The hotel’s court-yard swimming pool, is the ideal place to relax with a cool drink or a light lunch.
The Santa Clara has a relaxed island retreat, HOTEL SAN PEDRO DE MAJAGUA, on an island about 45 minutes fast boat ride from Cartagena, which is very convenient for both day trips and a night stops. This comprises of sixteen, simply fur-nished thatched cabanas, set amongst the trees next to the sea and a private sandy beach. The Hotel Santa Clara and Mijagua make a great com-bination, the hustle and bustle of Cartagena and the peace and quiet of this island hotel.

THE HOTEL CHARLESTON is another stunning colonial conversion with an unusual history. The building was originally a Carmelite convent from the 17th century, then during the independence wars this peace and tranquility was shattered. The convent was converted into a barracks, then a jail, then a girl’s school and finally a noodle factory. Today the Charleston hotel has maintained most of the colonial atmosphere of this historical site, offer-ing a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere right in the heart of the old town. The hotel’s cool court-yards have water flowing though them, helping to naturally cool the surrounding air. The Charleston’s bedrooms have been decorated in a refreshing colonial style, most with marble floors, pastel coloured walls, and uncluttered simple colo-nial furniture. Every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, air-conditioning, cable television, a mini-bar and safebox. The hotel has a roof terrace with a restaurant, bar and swimming pool overlooking the old town and the sea.
THE HOTEL ALMIRANTE is an ideal hotel for those who prefer the modern luxury hotel. This tower hotel is set in Bocagrande, one of the modern areas of Cartagena, around ten minutes taxi ride from old town. The hotel overlooks the long sandy beach next to Cartagena, with only a narrow road between the two. The hotel has 62 suites and 118 bedrooms, all with a bathroom en-suite, air-condi-tioning, cable television, minibar and safebox. The height of the hotel means that you generally have a great view over the city, beach and the sea. The hotel has a fully equipped gym with sauna and massage facilities, although the swimming pool is fairly small, it is perfect for just cooling off. There are a number of bars, snack bars and restaurants in the hotel if you do not feel like moving too far. The Hotel Las Americas is around ten minutes out of Cartagena on it’s own private beach (dark sand). The hotels 250 comfortable bed-rooms have en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, cable television, Minibar, safebox and a private balcony. The hotel offers three different meal plans, bed and breakfast, half board or fully inclu-sive, which includes all your food and drinks. The hotel’s facilities include three swimming pools, a flood lit tennis court, gym, Turkish bath, a large jacuzzi, horse riding, and both motorised and un-motorised water sports. Scuba diving is available with fully licensed instructors. This is a great hotel for relaxing and allowing you to see Cartagena as and when you choose.
